• Description


    The principal research lines of the Spectroscopy and Industrial Catalysis (SpeICat) group are the operando spectroscopy characterization of catalysts and the design and synthesis of structured porous materials  for prevention of atmospheric pollution. By studying industrially implemented processes we aim for functionality improvement by a rigorous manipulation and conformation of existing materials, with special attention to the study of diffusion phenomena and thus optimizing the catalytic performance. The list of recent research topics include DeNOx ( NH3-SCR, CH4-SCR) , VOC elimination (BTX, HCHO, MetOH, TCE, PCE, MEK, Dioxins, etc.) , oxidation of CO  and SO2 , and finally treatment and cleansing of acid gases (H2S, HCl, HF y SOx) by sorption based methods in porous materials.

    Case story I:
    Results on first monolithic design of a operando FTIR-ms reactor makes coverpage in PCCP
    Researchers Miguel Angel Bañares, Pedro Ávila and Søren B. Rasmussen from ICP-CSIC, in collaboration with Philippe Bazin and Marco Daturi from Laboratoire Catalyse et Spectrochimie(ENSICAEN) from Caen University (France), and Johannes Due-Hansen from the Centre for Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry (CSC), DTU Denmark/Haldor Topsoe A/S  have published the article Monitoring catalysts at work in their final form: spectroscopic investigations on a monolithic catalyst, in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (PCCP) af successfully performing the first operando experiment with a monolithic formed catalyst subjected to FTIR-ms studies in relation to the NH3-SCR (DeNOx) process.

    Case story II: 
    ECPE collaborating on project to remove the "rotten egg" smell from water treatment plants

    Together with CIEMAT, UNED, ICV/CSIC the groups of ECPE and Catalysis Spectroscopy Lab (M. Bañares) from ICP-CSIC have been participating in the project DETOX-H2S, where the aim was to invent novel technologies for eficient and cheap removal of sulphur traces from the off-gases produced during water treatment in waste-water plants. The chemical engineering company DRAGE and the plant in Viveros de la Villa (in charge of cleaning around one fourth  of waste water produced in Madrid, Spain) are also closely collaborating with the research teams.
